When taste becomes value and pungnyu
On the evening of July 26, 2024, we took a cool summer night as our accompaniment and savored a little pungnyu. Stella Artois — the Belgian premium beer that stands for the pleasures of the table — brought its Stella Dining Club to meet NANRO at Mongtan, the standard-bearer for Korean barbecue.
The value of shared taste: Stella Dining Club
Founded in 2022, the Stella Dining Club is a gastronomy community offering special dining experiences alongside Stella Artois. It was born out of a search for a way to set Stella apart from other beers — a search that led to a simple realization: beer and food cannot be pulled apart. Since then, it has grown by casting a light on the value of gathering people who are serious about food, with a hosting culture at its core, and members continue to run the club through their own voluntary hosting of gatherings.
Enjoying pungnyu with Stella
Stella may well be the only beer that, at the mere sight of it, calls a matching dish to mind. It is a Belgian premium beer, and Belgians drink it with Belgian frites and moules-frites (steamed mussels). The savory-yet-slightly-bitter taste Stella draws from Saaz hops lifts the flavor of the food, and that is why it pairs so gracefully not only with frites and moules-frites but with a wide range of dishes. This is a balance of flavor that only comes from a beer designed with food in mind.
Add the Stella Dining Club to that, and it becomes clear just how seriously Stella takes the dining experience. Flavor plus influence, meeting influence, produces another kind of food-culture experience — a synergy. And that is exactly why NANRO joined hands with Stella this time.
This collaboration between the Stella Dining Club and the nanrohoe was a night for people serious about food to gather and enjoy the pungnyu of a cool summer evening. We look forward to the day Korean barbecue opens its doors in cities around the world, becomes a natural friend to each place's homegrown brands, and settles into daily life. In that light, "Stella Dining Club X NANRO" — where Korea's food culture met Belgium's — was, in a way, a preview of that future.
