Foreign Correspondents Walked Through Majang-dong and Fell for the Flavor of Hanwoo

This nanrohoe was built to introduce Korea's dining scene, as it is today, to media outlets that work actively abroad. The particular goal was to convey what 'Korean barbecue' really is when you experience it in Korea — set against the Korean-style grilling that has already spread widely overseas. The guests were food journalists who had eaten their way through the world's culinary battlegrounds — the UK, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan — so the day was designed to reach past the food itself and center on the experience and the values that surround the grill. So the group walked through Majang-dong market together, felt the heat of the fire at Born & Bred, and were led through it all by sight, smell, and touch. One experience will deepen understanding more than a hundred explanations.

Because the export channels for Hanwoo are still limited, what these journalists had encountered as 'Korean grill' abroad is inevitably a different thing from what one experiences in Korea. The conversation walked through how Korea's grill culture has evolved, and drew out sharp feedback: what struck them as new, and where the story could be told more strongly.

The correspondents took the day and turned it into writing for their own outlets, and through those pieces the audience for grilled Hanwoo widened. The English-language stories that followed carried the fine texture of the visit, and the small moments that had moved them, with no need for translation.
